Much more work to setup, but it is really a question between you and your users. For what it's worth, I've always thought of signup reminders as for admins rather than for users. That is, you choose the policy that you feel minimizes the chance for no-shows -- and putting fancier controls in user's registration info does not help achieve this goal in my opinion. But again, this is between you and your users.
